A World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) fan named Stephen A. Arceneaux III of Destrehan, Louisiana died in a “rear naked choke hold” by his 14-year-old cousin during a WrestleMania 28 party on Sunday.

According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, 24-year-old Arceneaux was wrestling with his young cousin during a party to watch the pay-per-view WWE WrestleMania and refused to “tap out.”

Arceneaux was pronounced dead at 10:39 p.m. on Sunday after being rushed to the hospital, the Times-Picayune reported.

The report said that 220-pound Arceneaux and his cousin, who weighed half his weight, were wrestling on a blowup mattress at his party. The cousin held him in a “rear naked choke hold” for 30 to 40 seconds as Arceneaux “refused to tap out.”

According to a witness, Arceneaux began turning blue and told the young cousin to let him go. By that time, however, Arceneaux had stopped breathing. Friends tried to give him mouth-to-mouth  resuscitation but it was unsuccessful.

Sampa Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts Comments:

We have to pray for his soul and Family after this tragedy may god have his hands over Arceneaux Family. We are not here to judge anyone But it is very proper to say that those techniques and submission holds should not be practiced anywhere but over the dojo or a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial Arts academy.

With proper teaching and on a controlled environment those accidents that will hurt families for life could be avoided, I hope all the bjj and mma instructors have a proper talk and instructions to their students leading them to a healthier and happy life.

I wish that all the MMA fans understand that a lot of the MMA and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu techniques are lethal and not something to be used in games.

At Sampa Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Mixed Martial arts, we show to all students that this is not something to play Brazilian Jiu JItsu is a very important serious and dangerous arts that have to be practiced with the right supervision not by amateurs.

RIP Arceneaux

Progression in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Patience is key | brazilian jiu jitsu

brazilian jiu jitsu

A lot of people, including myself, have that question that beckons in the back of our self-conscious every time we get on the mat to train: When am I going to get better? Well the answer to that is simple – have patience. Now, just to be clear, I’m no expert in the field of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. As a matter of fact, I’ve only been training for a couple months, but I’ve talked to many other Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners from beginners to intermediates to masters, and I’ve gleaned the same advice and lessons: Patience and persistence is the only way to progress in this sport.

brazilian jiu jitsu

It goes something like this: You should up for training one day and you feel like a million bucks – the techniques the professor is teaching are just sinking in, you’re rolling and getting the most dominant positions and constantly sweeping your opponent. Other nights, it’s the polar opposite. It seems as if absolutely nothing the professor has shown you is sinking in and you’re constantly getting rolled, swept, and submitted. Fear not, these are natural processes in the realm of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At least, that’s what the more advanced students are telling me. Even as I’m writing this article, I still can’t help but kick that feeling in the back of my mind; I still can’t heed my own advice. At this point, faith in yourself and your trainers become imperative to progression in this sport.

Some helpful advice that I keep in my pocket to sustain myself through particularly difficult training sessions is this: You’re getting better whether or not you realize it. One day, small things will begin to “click” and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lessons will begin to make more sense. You will begin to realize the reasons why you’re doing what you’re doing and lessons will become more informant. Before you know it, you will be learning more about yourself and the way your body works, the reasons why techniques work, and the proper positioning and movements to get your opponent to where you want to go.

5 reasons to enroll in self defense classes

Image

1.) To improve your self-confidence – It’s no mystery that self-defense improves confidence in fighting, but it also improves confidence in other aspects of a person’s life. Proficiency in self-defense requires quite a bit of dedication and hard-work. Like anything else in life that a person works hard for, the result is always something to be proud of. After many grueling hours of practicing technique and working hard in the gym, the result is almost always a more proficient, well-rounded and physically intelligent individual, which is something that anyone can be proud of.

2.) Physical training will improve your ability to focus for longer period of time – Numerous studies have been conducted that show a correlation between fitness and an improved ability to concentrate. Being a college student, I very heavily rely on my ability mentally focus for long periods of time. Whether it’s during a lecture, a test, or just studying, I need to be able to focus on material long enough to comprehend it, interpret it, and then regurgitate that same information on a test. Unfortunately there’s no secret formula to improving your focus but physical training can certainly give you the kind of self-discipline that can help you get to the point where you want to be.

3.) You will gain the ability to defend yourself – Should a situation arise in your everyday life where you need to defend yourself against a person who intends you harm, the training you receive at Sampa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will be priceless. Don’t wait until something happens to you to begin training in self-defense; be proactive. If somebody is going to attack you, odds are they’re not going to wait until you’re sufficiently prepared and ready for a fight; they’re probably going to attack you when you’re off guard. The training you will receive here at Sampa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu could potentially save your life; it will prepare you for situations when an attacker catches you off guard.

4.) You will become more fit and have more energy as a result – There’s no denying that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a sport all in its own, but one thing that it has with other sports is the level of conditioning you will receive as you become more experienced and move through the ranks. There’s no denying that fitness is a very important thing to focus on; numerous studies have shown that people who are more fit, tend to lead more active, longer, and healthy lives in the long-run. The fitness benefits you will receive from Sampa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu’s training will ensure that you see the same benefits you would from participating in any other sport. You will learn to defend yourself and become more fit – it’s truly a win-win situation.

5.) You will make new friends – Here at Sampa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we place an emphasis on friendship and a safe environment. The people you meet here will always train with respect towards one another. This typically leads to friendships outside of the gym. It is definitely a major benefit to training. The more time you spend training, the more recognizable faces become and the better the relationships that are forged will become as a result.

We’re so committed to giving you the benefits outlined above and we’re so confident that you’ll see results that you’re proud of, we’re offering a 30-Day Risk Free Trial. That’s right. There’s no obligation, no deposit required, and no contracts to sign; you simply come in and try out our program for 30-Days Risk Free. If you come in and train and decide this program isn’t for you, you will owe nothing. Now you don’t have an excuse – come in for your free trial today.
